Director’s
Notes
By
William D. Parker
-
If
you don’t follow directions, bad things happen to you.
-
Good
things happen, in time, to good people who are faithful and patient.
-
Love
conquers all, even a witch’s spell.
“Good.
Now, our last group. Ready?”
“Just
one question. Do we have to agree
with the lesson, Mr. Parker?”
“No,
just state it as you and your group saw it.”
“OK,
here goes.”
“Oh,
and Mr. Parker, one more thing…”
The
preceding were all direct quotes from eighth-grade students when asked to read
the original storybook versions of the four main fairy tales portrayed in the
show you are about to see.
We
pulled the books right out of the school library; the same books our preschool
and kindergarten students have had read to them almost every day.
They were asked to look past the pretty pictures, the thoughts of
princes, wolves, witches, and giants, and get to the lesson learned from reading
these stories. All of these students
were amazed to realize the stories were not exactly what they remembered when
the stories had been read to them as a younger child.
Though
some of these stories are almost one thousand years old, the lessons learned
still apply in our world in this new millennium.
Cinderella could just as well live today in
Bethesda
and dream of going to an Inaugural Ball. Jack
sets out on his journey with his cow from his
small home in Centreville. The Baker
opens shop in
Cleveland
Park
. Even witches, wolves, and giants
appear in our lives today.
As
you watch this production, think of friends and family who face the challenges
our fairy tale characters face. Think
of those childless couples who would do anything to have a child; the predatory
men who prey upon unsuspecting children, and how tough those children come out
in the end; even the assistant who only wants to be recognized for his work by
his high-powered boss. And let’s
not even mention the marital infidelity! Fairy
tale, HAH! Might as well be Oprah or
Jerry Springer!
No
fear folks, no chairs will fly tonight, but do watch out for the truth smacking
you in the face. My hope is that
when you get home this evening, you think back on the fairy tale that is your
life and see how you would tell your tale. Just
remember to be nice to those wicked stepsisters of yours.
They are writing their stories, too, and you are on page one.

The Cast
Jen
Adams
(Magic in Black/Snow White) – Into the
Woods is Jen’s first production. She
is interested in doing some acting and thought that this would be a good way to
see how everything works. She wants
to thank her boyfriend Jef for supporting her in this new adventure.
Greg Austin (Cinderella’s
Prince) – This is Greg’s first production with the St. Mark’s Players and
he is thrilled to be here! Always a
child, Greg appreciates the opportunity to relive these wonderful fairy tales
again. Greg’s DC theatre ventures
include performing as Nick in Baby and
choreographing Sweet Charity, both
with FP. Prior to coming to DC, Greg
lived in
Florida
and was in the entertainment profession for 15 years.
Greg would like to dedicate this performance to his loving family for
their constant love and “never letting him stray far from the path,” his
friends for the constant “festival,” and to his special Prince . . . “take
me home.”
Lauren Bloom (Cinderella’s
Stepmother) – Lauren is delighted to return to SMP, where she played Fastrada
in last season’s production of Pippin.
An attorney by day, Lauren is also an aspiring cabaret singer.
Past favorite roles include Catherine in Pippin,
Gwendolyn Fairfax in The Importance of
Being Earnest (which she recently reprised with PTP), and the title role in Auntie Mame.
David J. Clement, Jr. (Magic
in Black) – Into the Woods will be
the first of many productions David hopes to be involved in.
“I would like to thank my family, Dave and Jeff, in supporting my
decision to delve into theater—my love always.
I hope you all enjoy the show.”
Amy Conley (Baker's
Wife) – Amy most recently appeared as Guinevere in the DC area premiere of Jekyll
& Hyde: The Musical with TCP. She
also appeared in SCT’s Oliver! after
moving from
Southern California
where she appeared in several shows, including playing Ethel Toffelmier in The
Music Man, Dan’s wife in Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat, and performing as a featured
soloist in a musical revue, Love and
Laughter on Broadway. She has
also served as vocal/musical director on a number of productions and as director
and performer in a vocal jazz quartet. Amy
is currently the Music Director at Celebration Center of Religious Science in
Falls Church
, teaches private piano and voice lessons, and works as a legal secretary.
Giuseppe
DeBartolo (Steward/Wolf 2) – Giuseppe is excited to finally be a
part of a production of Into the Woods.
He was last seen at SMP in last spring’s WATCH-nominated Pippin,
as the Talking Head. Between shows
with SMP he did The Heidi Chronicles
with SSS (WATCH nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play) and Death
of a Salesman with TAP. Other
credits include Sweeney Todd with SSTG, A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with RMT, Noises Off with Brooke Hills Playhouse, and Children of Eden and Godspell

Susquehanna
University
.

University
of
Virginia
(class of 1999), and he performed in over a dozen U.Va. mainstage/Heritage
Repertory Theatre musicals and plays during his four years there.

Mare
,
Italy
, singing selections by Bellini, Handel, and Menotti.
Erin
plans to continue graduate studies in music and theater in
California
next year.
Michelle Jones (Little
Red Ridinghood) – Michelle was last seen performing with CrossCurrents Dance
Company in their concert entitled Infinite
Moments held at Dance Place in February.
She also recently performed her debut cabaret at Mr. Henry's Capitol Hill
in Love Happens . . . Not. She
has been seen in productions of Sweet
Charity (FP), Man of La Mancha and
West Side Story (RCP), and Hair
(LTA). Michelle has also
performed with Jazzdanz.dc (now JazzDanz/DC), a resident jazz company at Joy of
Motion.
Lisa
Anne Kerwin
(Narrator)
– Lisa has been with SMP since The
Music Man in 1994. Her
onstage roles here have included Mrs. Frank (The Diary of Anne Frank), Chris (Dancing at Lughnasa), and every bitter old woman in Broadway
musical history (An Evening at the
Tony's). Offstage, her
resumé runs the gamut from Producer to House Manager and everything in between.
To fund her theatre habit, she is a teacher in
Montgomery
County
,
MD
,
where she is juggling re-igniting the county’s interest in the German language
with sponsoring the Quince Orchard High School Color Guard.
Hershel
Kleinberg (Cinderella’s Father) – Hershel returns to SMP after an
eight-year hiatus. His most
memorable performance at SMP was as Tevye in the 1993 production of Fiddler
on the Roof. Other area
productions include the Sergeant of Police in The Pirates of Penzance,
Marcus Licus in a Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,
and the Mikado in The Mikado. Hershel
wants to offer thanks for this chance to work with such a talented cast.
Edith
Marshall (Jack’s Mother) –
Edith is returning to musical theater after a more than decade-long hiatus.
A musical comedienne since college, her roles have included Nancy in Oliver!,
Lucy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!,
and many of the oddest women in G&S operetta, including Katisha (The
Mikado), Phoebe (Yeomen of the Guard), Mad Margaret (Ruddigore),
and Lady Jane (Patience).
She was formerly a member of the professional musical revue group “The
Showstoppers,” and later the DC-based “Music Lobby,” which performed
political and legal musical satires for everyone from Georgetown Law students to
the U.S. Supreme Court.
Marla
McClure (Cinderella)
– Marla is happy to return to St. Mark’s and is thrilled and honored to be
part of such a great show! Marla has
also appeared in other shows in the DC area, including Pippin (SMP), Steel
Pier, Damn Yankees!,
and Crazy for You (all at TAP). Other
credits include Into the Woods (Little Red Ridinghood), Anything Goes
(Hope Harcourt), and The Sound of Music (Liesl Von Trapp).
When not scrubbing floors, Marla enjoys watching
Wake
Forest
basketball and her cat Smokey. During
the day, she works for an economic consulting group in DC.
Thanks to the talented cast and crew for putting on a fantastic show
while also having a lot of fun in the process!
Love to Steve, the girls, and Smokey…Go Deacs!
Kate McKenna (Florinda)
– Kate is a newcomer to DC and SMP. She
studied music at The University of the South in
Sewanee
,
TN.
Kate has recently performed in Cole
Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate and Anything
Goes!. She would like to thank
her family and friends for their support!
Dave
Moretti
(Mysterious
Man) – After a fifteen-year hiatus from community theater, Dave is excited to
be back on the stage in his first production with SMP.
A marketing consultant and distributor of customized ad specialty items
and apparel, he also enjoys doing renovations on his home, tinkering with
computers, socializing with “the bears” and keeping up with “the cubs.”
His past roles have included “Papa Bull” in Annie
Get Your Gun and “That Dreadful Hungarian” in My
Fair Lady. He shares…
“Explore the things that make you happy and keep you young in heart and mind.
Focus on those you care about and always treat yourself with the respect
that you deserve. Make a difference
in someone’s life when you can, and allow others to make a difference in
yours.” Thanks to the ITW cast and crew for making a difference!
Melissa Schwartz
(Lucinda) – Missy was last seen as a dancer in SMP’s 20th
Anniversary Gala. She marked her
return to community theatre after several years last fall in the FP production
of Sweet Charity. Before
that, she appeared in northwest
Ohio
productions of Once Upon a Mattress, A Chorus Line, Anything
Goes!, and Damn Yankees! By
day, she is an economist with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and spends her
free time as a yoga enthusiast and as a dance student at Joy of Motion.
She thanks her fellow cast and crew members, as well as her family and
friends for their encouragement!
Brenda Shaw (Magic In
Black/Sleeping Beauty) – As the mother of teenagers (also involved in
theatre), being invisible while running special effects is a daily role for her.
Brenda is most happy to return to SMP after being part of the Pippin cast here last spring and as a dancer in January's 20th
Anniversary Gala! In November
she was Sister Leo in Nunsense at CCP.
She has also been seen as Sabina in Skin
of Our Teeth, Liz in The Snow Ball,
and Andy in Steppin’ Out, and is
currently searching for a Theatreholics Anonymous group nearby (as long as she
can work it in around shows, theatre board meetings and backstage assists . .
.).
Kristina
Kay Sine (Cinderella’s
Mother/Granny/Giant) – Kristina is very happy to be joining the fabulous cast
and crew of Into
The Woods for
her first SMP production. Kristina
holds a B.F.A. in vocal performance from
Shenandoah
University
and has
had several awesome opportunities to share her talents.
She would like to take this opportunity to thank Matt and Steve for the
futon in Shirlington, Bucky, the Monkey, Tricie, Christy, and the rest of her
peeps . . . much love.
Christopher Tully
(Baker) – This is Chris’ ninth performance with SMP, and his thirteenth show
overall. He has played everything
from a neurotic bureaucrat with nasal problems (The
Good Doctor) to a young Irishman with a dysfunctional family (Dancing
at Lughnasa) to a science student (Galileo)
to a con man with an interesting spin on the English language (Pal Joey). This is his
second musical performance as a Baker (the first in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat), and he
has done pretty much everything else on the SMP stage.
His performances with other theater groups include Bela Zangler in Crazy
for You and Kiss of the Spider Woman at
TAP, and Pirates of Penzance.
Chris would like to thank his ever-understanding wife, Susan, with whom
he’s just completed their first wonderful year together!
Jill Vohr (Witch)
– This is Jill’s second show with
St. Mark’s and her – how many is it now? – show with
Bill Parker
. She’s
also right at home with the cast since she’s worked with many of them before.
Jill is a quintessential theatre “junkie,” having studied at NYU’s
Tisch
School
of the Arts and performed in
everything from Shakespeare to summer stock to Club MTV.
Her “real job” is promoting environmental programs at the EPA.
Other local appearances include Cabaret
(Sally Bowles); Sweeney Todd; G&S;
Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel); Godspell
(Joanne); Simon’s California Suite
(Millie); Sweet Charity (Nickie); Pippin
(Catherine), for which she received a WATCH award nomination; and Oliver!
(
Nancy
), for which she received ACT’s Best
Actress in a Musical award. Jill
thanks SMP for choosing her for the Witch and promises that no one will be
replacing the “W” with a “B” after this is over.
Ross Wolfarth (Jack)
– Ross is a sophomore at the
Thomas
Jefferson
High School
for Science and Technology in
Fairfax
County
, where he sings in the Chamber Ensemble and Men’s Glee Club, and where he
does his best to avoid really concentrating on the study of math or science.
His prior theatrical credits include Imam in T.J.’s 2001 production of Kismet,
various parts in productions at Swanson Middle School in Arlington (Nathan
Detroit in Guys and Dolls; Rooster in Annie;
Tom Sawyer’s brother in Tom Sawyer),
roles in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas staged by the World Children’s Choir
(Nanki Poo in The Mikado; Strephon in Iolanthe),
and whatever brother it was that sang the French number in the Cherrydale
Methodist Church production of Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat.
The
Production Staff
Jeffrey Scott Auerbach
(Lighting Designer/Master Electrician/ Light Board Operator) – Jeff has
been lighting area community theater for several years now.
A couple of his shows have been nominated for prestigious awards
from ACT and ACTF. He is proud
to be a part of this production and the Players.
He would like to extend his thanks to Dave M., and David C. for
helping light up his life. A
special thanks to Mike Pemberton. Enjoy
the show.
Michele M. Bell (Properties
Mistress) – Having long enjoyed the theatre, Michele is thrilled to have
“crossed over” from enthusiastic audience member to production crew
member for this production of Into the Woods. She also
enjoys the idea of being a mistress she can tell her husband about.
When she’s not building beanstalks, Michele is the Manager of
Benefits and Compensation at The Catholic University of America.
In her spare time she’s unpacking from a recent move to a new
home and enjoys cooking, crafts and travel.
Thanks to Mike and
Chad
for getting me wrapped up in this and to Bob for his love, support, and
skill with the power tools.
Jerry Dale, Jr. (Assistant
Stage Manager) – Jerry returns to SMP for his second show.
“I really enjoyed my experience stage managing SMP’s production
of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and I am excited about this
production of Into the Woods.”
Look for Jerry behind the scenes in SMP’s upcoming production of The
Sound of Music.
Joyce Gillogly (Stage
Manager) – Joyce is happy to be working again with
Bill Parker
, moving from the Colorado Rockies of Little
Mary Sunshine (DS) to the “Woods” of SMP.
Joyce’s last appearance at SMP was as stage manager for our
production of The Secret Garden many
years ago. Hats off to the
hard-working cast and crew of this show, who have made this a wonderful
experience. It has been fun,
getting to meet so many new and talented people in the “Woods.”
Tim Goecke (Set
Design) – Tim has been designing for theater and museums in the
Baltimore/Washington area since 1985.
His theater credits include productions at The Washington Ballet,
Gallaudet
University
, Theater Conspiracy, and the Source Theatre, among others.
In museum exhibit design, he has worked on projects for The
Smithsonian Institution, The Contemporary Museum, DCArtworks, and The
Mardi Gras Museum in
New Orleans
. Commercial projects have
included The Coca-Cola Diversity Project, Hasbro/Kenner's Star Wars
Episode I Toyfair, and the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Tim is currently working at the
University
of
Delaware
as Head of Exhibition Design for the Museum Studies Program.
Douglas Gowin (Costume
Designer) – Douglas is the power behind Itzadougie Design and has been
providing staging, lights, and costumes for stage, television, and
corporate and special events since his early days in Kansas City, MO.
For the past few years, he has been involved largely in musical
theatre, costuming The Wizard of Oz, Annie,
and Oliver! for the Cheverly
Young Actors Guild, and Once Upon a
Mattress for
Paul
VI
High School
in
Fairfax
. His designs for SMP have
included The Wizard of Oz (again)
and last season’s Pippin.
Rick Hayes (Makeup and
Hair Co-Designer) – Rick has been working as an actor and director with
SMP for 12 years. His
production of Pippin was
nominated for eight WATCH awards, including Best Musical.
He will be directing Aristophanes’ The
Birds at PCP this fall and LTA's production of A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in January 2003.
Rick wants to thank Bill and
Chad
for giving him the opportunity to help create the fantasy of Into
the Woods.
Alan
Margolis (Rehearsal Pianist) – Alan last worked with SMP on
their production of Pal Joey.
He has been away from music while working on his Master’s degree
in fiction writing from Johns Hopkins and thanks Bill for luring him back
to the piano bench. Favorite
musical experiences in the area over the last fifteen years include The
Cabaret at Windows, La Cage aux
Folles (DS), Closer than Ever (SCT),
The Fantasticks (CCP) and Forever
Plaid (Musical Director --
Essex, MD). During the day, he
is an attorney at the EPA. As you read this, he is hiking on the Cornish
coast, a wish come true.
Ed
Morman (Sound Designer) – Ed is pleased to be back working
with the SMP, where he has already developed a reputation as the “last
minute savior,” coming to the rescue at the eleventh hour for Pippin
when the original sound designer quit just days before Opening Night.
He earned that title again for Sweet Charity with FP,
another production in which he was a last-minute addition to the
production staff. His first
credit in a program occurred when he designed the sound for The
Best Christmas Pageant Ever for SMP.
Away from the theatre, Ed works for Booz, Allen and Hamilton.
Pat Jarvis
(Rehearsal Pianist) – Pat has been music director for many shows
in the area, including Pippin
last year at SMP, for which she, along with her partner,
Bill Parker
, won the WATCH award for best music direction.
That show immediately followed a production of The
World Goes ‘Round for SCT, for which she won the ACT award for best
music direction. Most recently
she directed the music for Sweet
Charity at FP.
William D. Parker (Director)
– Though this is Bill’s debut as director for a SMP production, he is
no stranger to the Players, having been involved with every musical since
1999, when he played Levi and the
Butler
in Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor® Dreamcoat.
Since then, he has music directed Pal
Joey, The Wizard of Oz, and Pippin,
for which he and
Pat Jarvis
shared the WATCH award for Best Music Direction.
Bill also serves on the Board for the Players, working on the
Director Selection and Play Selection Committees.
Bill has music directed many other shows in area community
theaters, including Oliver! and Closer Than Ever with SCT (winner ACT Best Music Director), The
Fantasticks at MTA, and is preparing to music direct
Victor
,
Victoria
with LTA this summer.
Bill works as a program assistant with the Cathedral Choral
Society, and is always on the lookout for that next directing gig.
He gives a big thanks to the cast and crew for all of their time,
effort and creativity. This
show is dedicated to the memory of Elsie Mae Duffner Parker:
“Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood.
Do not let it grieve you, no one leaves for good.
You are not alone.”
Alvin Smithson
(Rehearsal Pianist) – This is
Alvin
’s fifteenth production with SMP. His
heart and music go to everyone playing a role: cast, crew and musicians.
Now he’s in the Theater World full time.
Yeah!
Daniel J. Spadoni
(Orchestral Director) – Dan has been very active in community musical
theater in the DC area for several years—as a percussionist.
His most recent shows were Sweet Charity with FP and Return
to the Forbidden Planet with LTA.
He is also co-principal percussionist with the City of
Fairfax Band
and The McLean Symphony. In
his spare time Dan is a support contractor for NASA.
“If someone can’t play a musical instrument, give him two
sticks and make him a drummer; if he can’t do that, take one away and
make him a conductor.” After
Into the Woods he intends to pick up the other stick and crawl
quietly back behind his drum set. Many
thanks to Bill, SMP, the wonderful cast, crew and musicians of Into the
Woods, and most especially to Dr. Pat.
Leah Stein (Rehearsal
