Our Story

The St. Mark's Players is a participatory community theater company with its own Board of Directors. Performing in the 100 year-old National Historic Landmark St. Mark's Church, the Players are chartered under the auspices of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in order to use the theatrical medium to provide an avenue through which we explore our lives, see ourselves more clearly, and serve our community.

The goals of the company are to provide personal growth to members of the company - both young people and adults; to create an outlet for dramatic and musical talent within the community; to engage and entertain our audiences; and to contribute to worthy parish and community projects.

Founded in 1983 to perform Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, the Players have expanded far beyond this repertoire. Three works are presented each season: a family-oriented musical for the Holiday Season, a serious dramatic selection during the Lenten Season, and a major Broadway musical in the spring. Each year over 300 people - approximately one half from the St. Mark's Parish and the other half from all over the Washington metro area - participate on stage and behind the scenes in creating these productions.
